Sustainable Printing Tips
Updating your printing practices is an easy way to create more environmentally sustainable daily habits. Making small changes can have a big impact. Printing can be made more sustainable by following the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Here are some tips on how to apply the three R’s to your printing habits at home and in the office.
Reduce
- Print with Elementree Sustainable Printer Paper. This paper is made with sawmill waste chips, so zero trees were cut to produce it. It is also made using renewal wind energy and hydropower, conserves water by using 47% less water that standard copy paper, has a lower carbon footprint with 44% less CO2 than standard copy paper, and produces 50% more paper from the same amount of wood.
- When possible, print on both sides to reduce the amount of paper you use. Not only does this reduce paper expenses, it also reduces your carbon footprint by half.
- Using thinner fonts when printing can reduce the amount of ink you use. For example, rather than using Arial, switch to Century Gothic to save on ink. Calibri and Cambria are also thinner fonts that may save ink.
- Expand the margins on your documents. Rather than using the default margins, expanding your margins can reduce the number of pages your print.
Reuse
- Ink cartridges can be reused. This option can save on plastic and save some money. Retailers like Staples and Office Depot offer to refill cartridges for a fee, or you can opt to refill them yourself.
- Reuse paper whenever possible. Print on the back of used paper. For further tips on what to do with shredded paper, check out our blog: What to Do with Shredded Paper?
Recycle
- Ink and toner cartridges can be recycled. Local retailers often accept used ink and toner cartridges, or you can check with your local recycling center. There are also some companies that offer payment for used ink and toner cartridges like InkRecycling.
- Recycle all paper products, including shredded paper.
